When Probiotics Fail

About a year ago, seemingly out of nowhere, Augie developed IBD and a slew of allergies and I struggled to find anything to feed him that he was willing to eat that didn't make him sicker. His anxiety levels also went through the roof, and he'd go into an absolute panic for something as small as a fly in the house. Eventually I discovered that cooking him sweet potatoes and tilapia, fortified with pricy supplements, was palatable and allowed him to put some weight back on, but as a giant breed, cooking for him was consuming a lot of my time and budget. I was pretty skeptical when I heard about Gut Restore, but it's done wonders. He's back to his big healthy, bouncy self, excitedly eating limited ingredient kibble and the occasional treat, and his IBD-related anxiety has abated (he's high strung in general, but it was unmanageable for a while there). He was in such bad shape when we started that the Gut Restore was making him sicker, so we had to start very slowly, with one pill every other morning so that I could monitor him during the day. Over time we built up to two a day and will keep him on two a day for a month before tapering off.

This product has been life changing for my small poodle mix who has had chronic soft stools. I was able to also do the glacier's peak pet intolerance test to eliminate his food sensitivities but due to his chronic pancreatitis and having his gut biome negatively impacted by rounds of pancreatitis he was struggling with loose stools/maldigestion and losing weight quickly. The vet initially suggested Visbiome which did not help and another round of antibiotics (which would only be a temporary solution and his symptoms would worsen and return once stopped). Instead of getting another refill of metronidazole, I decided to give this product a try. Within a day his stools were already firming up and improved quickly over the next week. It's been about three weeks now of daily use and he is able to gain back some weight and has not had a single loose stool. I am so grateful for this product.

While I have been asked to review the gut test, I find it hard to do so without incorporating the other products. It does not stand alone. Here's the story. Over two years ago, we started fostering a cat who was very ill. For more than a year, the vet had been suggesting to the rescue that they euthanize her. When we got her, she was losing her food from both ends of her body. She would throw up and have diarrhea at the same time, and she did it many times a day. She was down to 4.5 pounds. We tried all the prescription diets the vet asked us to experiment with. It was awful. Each one had to be tried for three months (they were not the ones picking up the poop.) After the vet gave up completely, I found better non-prescription foods by myself (Stella Chewy's Freeze Dried Raw.) That helped but did not solve the problem. Then I found Animal Biome in October 2023. The report told us that Solstice was missing key bacteria found in healthy pets. 83% of her bacteria was one thing. Over the last two years, we have used Animal Biome Products to add healthy bacteria and balance it. Finally, in July 2025, her bacteria is healthy and balanced. Her poops look good and she does not throw up. She is a healthy 8-pound cat. Yes, it took a while, but we persisted and it worked. Below are before and after pictures.

My dog Champ has been on Gut restore since October 2024 at age 11 months.
He had IBD, Gastrointestinal Dysbiosis and severe anxiety from having his gut flora destroyed after three rounds of flagyl. I kept going to my regular vet with bloody stool 12-16 times a day and they would put him on flagyl. Henceforth I choose a Certified Holistic Veterinarian who the first visit put him on Gut Restore. It’s been 10 months and we are transitioning off of it but have it available (just in case).

Zorro had hemorrhagic gastroenteritis (HGE/AHDS) two years ago and nearly died — to save him from the Clostridium perfringens that was attacking his gut, he had to be put on antibiotics as a last-ditch effort. The antibiotic saved his life but destroyed his gut microbiome.
