Researching solutions for the love of pets

Animal Biome is working to better understand the products our pets consume, and how they affect their microbiome and overall health.

We have tested foods, functional treats, probiotics, postbiotics, supplements, and fecal microbiota transplants. We also target specific health issues commonly associated with gut and oral dysbiosis, such as itchy skin, bad breath, diarrhea, and allergies.

Whether you have a feline friend or a canine companion, your pet’s participation in our studies helps make a difference in creating happier, healthier lives for all pets.

Studies Undergoing Analysis

  • Cat Probiotic Study

    For Cats

This research study will assess the effects of a new probiotic on the gut microbiome and health of cats. We are looking for cats of all ages, breeds, and sexes who have received antibiotics within the prior 3 months. Enrolled cats will be given 1 scoop of probiotic powder daily for 28 days. Participation will involve the collection of fecal samples from your pet, and completion of a brief survey, at 4 times – before, during, and after the study. If you are interested in participating, please complete the form below.

  • Equine Ulcer Trial

    For Horses

In collaboration from Sarah Griffiths from The Animal Synergist, we are identifying the microbiome biomarkers of disease in horses with ulcers, equine metabolic syndrome, and fecal water syndrome. The microbiome of 200 horses from Canada were sampled and data analysis will commence soon.

  • Gut Maintain Study

    For Dogs

We are evaluating our Gut Maintain supplement on healthy dogs. The primary objective of the study is to support their gut health and microbiome balance during demanding periods of high athletic performance.

  • Leader Dogs for the Blind Study

    Enrollment Closed • For Dogs

In collaboration with Leader Dogs for the Blind, a nonprofit organization, our study aimed to proactively address the occurrence of diarrhea in puppies bred for service dog training programs. We predicted that balancing the gut microbiome of breeding dams would help the mothers pass on beneficial bacteria to their puppies, leading to healthier puppies that are more likely to qualify for service dog training. To achieve this objective, we conducted a double-blind, placebo-controlled study where our Gut Restoration Supplement was given to breeding dams, and its effects on the gut health and development of their puppies were tracked over time.

  • Microbiome Golden Retriever Lifetime Study

Enrollment Closed • For Golden/Labrador Retrievers Dogs

In collaboration with the Morris Animal Foundation (MAF) Golden Retriever Lifetime Study (GRLS), we are identifying the nutritional, environmental, lifestyle and microbiome risk factors for cancer in dogs. We are comparing the microbiomes of healthy dogs, and dogs that develop cancer.

Completed Studies

  • Complete Fiber Blend Study

    For Cats & Dogs

We investigated the beneficial impacts of Complete Fiber Blend on the gut microbiome and stool consistency of dogs and cats. From a survey conducted in 65 dogs and 42 cats, we found that fecal consistency was improved in 70% of dogs with diarrhea or soft stools, constipation was relieved in all dogs and 1/3rd of cats, and healthy fecal consistency was maintained for healthy dogs.

  • Dog Probiotic Study

    For Dogs

In this study, we assessed the efficacy of our novel Peptacetobacter hiranonis probiotic on the gut health of dogs. We found that dogs given the probiotic showcased significant increases in Peptacetobacter hiranonis, and bile acid conversion, and also had better stool quality than those given a placebo. This probiotic is designed to restore the gut microbiome after antibiotics, and is especially effective at resolving diarrhea and gut issues when a P. hiranonis deficiency is suspected.

  • Ferret Microbiome Study

    For Ferrets

We surveyed the fecal microbiome of domestic ferrets of all ages, healthy or sick, to understand the relationship between the microbiome and chronic digestive issues such as gastritis, enteritis, and ulcers. By looking closely at the fecal microbiome (the community of bacteria in the gut), we discovered important differences between healthy ferrets and those with chronic enteropathy (CE).

While overall bacterial diversity was similar across groups, the types of bacteria present varied noticeably. Certain bacteria, like Enterococcus hirae and Streptococcus lutetiensis, were more common in ferrets with CE, while E. faecium and S. equorum were linked to healthy ferrets.

  • Petcurean GO! Solutions Digestion + Gut Health Diet Study

    For Dogs

This study tested the effect of a new diet designed for digestion and gut health on the microbiome and stooling habits of healthy dogs. We saw significant improvements in stool quality and support for a healthy microbiome, particularly during the challenge of diet transitions.

  • Itchy Skin EpiCor Supplement Study

    For Cats & Dogs

This study determined the 2x dosage of EpiCor was the most effective at resolving itchy skin and other skin issues in cats and dogs. We also noticed a stronger effect for dogs than for cats.

EpiCor is an immune modulating postbiotic ingredient derived from yeast, which has also been used as a health promoting supplement for humans.

  • The KittyBiome Project: Understanding Core Bacteria in Cats

    For Cats

In this study we surveyed the microbiome composition of a variety of domestic cats with different ages, diets, and living situations. We identified a group of 30 core bacteria found in most cats. The composition of these bacteria remained relatively consistent across age groups, however the number of taxa present decreased with age. We also found that the microbiome of cats living in homes differed greatly from those living in shelters. Understanding the composition of a typical cat microbiome holds the key to detecting feline health issues promptly and developing more effective strategies to restore them to their optimal state.

  • Gut Restore Supplement Before & After Survey

    For Cats & Dogs

Fecal microbiota transplants (FMT) can help improve gut health in dogs and cats with chronic digestive issues like diarrhea, vomiting, or constipation. We conducted a study to learn more about the wide range of benefits of our FMT capsules for pets. Our studies showed that FMT increased beneficial gut bacteria and improved microbial diversity. We detected significant engraftment of donor bacteria in the recipient. Up to 30% of bacteria from healthy donors successfully colonize recipients, with diet and prior antibiotic use influencing results.
