I’m writing this after a long, thoughtful course of using both AnimalBiome S. boulardii and Gut Restore (FMT) for my dog, who has had chronic skin inflammation and GI sensitivity since puppyhood. This was not a simple “loose stool” case — this was years of immune-driven skin issues, prior antibiotic exposure, and recurring flares that required Cytopoint in the past. S. boulardii was the more immediately noticeable of the two products. At higher doses, it clearly helped regulate stool consistency during unstable periods and reduced GI odor and mucus when present. It seemed to have a calming effect on overall gut reactivity. That said, dosing mattered a lot. At higher doses it can speed motility and soften stools, so it’s not something to blindly max out forever. It worked best for us as a therapeutic tool, then later at a lower maintenance dose. It did not magically fix skin issues on its own, but it did appear to reduce overall inflammatory load, which mattered long-term. So it seems to me that it helps modulate the immune system in some capacity.
We used S Boulardii in conjunction with FMT. FMT was not an overnight fix for leaky gut and I think people need to be realistic about that.
What it did do over the course of months, not weeks, was:
shifted stool quality in a more fundamental way (not just symptom control). Reduced chronic GI instability rather than just firming stools, coincided with gradual but meaningful improvement in systemic inflammation, especially in areas like the groin/underbelly that had been persistent problem zones.
It’s not an instant cure for allergies and will not immediately eliminate all itching, but over time it will reset the dog’s immune system to help the dog manage without the need for pharmaceuticals.
In our case, the biggest benefit of FMT was lowering the baseline — fewer flares, less severe flares, and longer stretches of stability. That’s huge when you’ve lived in “whack-a-mole” mode for years.
FMT and probiotics are powerful tools, not benign supplements. Timing, dosing, and patience matter. Using them when the gut is already unstable or changing too many variables at once can make things feel worse before they get better. This is not a plug-and-play product.
AnimalBiome’s products helped us move from constant crisis management to a more stable baseline. We went from needing Cytopoint every 4–6 weeks to being off systemic allergy drugs for over a year. We’re not at 100%, but we are dramatically better — and that difference feels real, not temporary.
If you’re expecting a miracle cure, you’ll be disappointed.
If you’re willing to use these tools thoughtfully as part of a long-term gut and immune strategy, while feeding a high quality human grade low carb high protein food that is free of synthetics, they can absolutely make a meaningful difference and change the dog’s life.
