About Saccharomyces boulardii

S. boulardii is a special probiotic that’s a strain of yeast, not bacteria. Studies have shown that S. boulardii is safe and effective for cats and dogs and that it can prevent and reduce diarrhea from multiple causes. It also has anti-inflammatory properties. As a probiotic, it is especially helpful for regrowing gut microbe populations that have become imbalanced and for promoting healthy skin.

And unlike bacterial probiotics, S. boulardii isn’t affected by antibiotics, so it can also be used during antibiotic treatment to help with the digestive side effects that antibiotics often cause. Studies have shown that when S. boulardii is given along with an antibiotic, pets are much less likely to develop diarrhea during or after the course of medication.

S. boulardii is also resilient to stomach acid, so when it reaches the intestines, it’s still intact and alive, while many bacterial probiotics die in the stomach and never make it to the gut. Once in the gut, S. boulardii produces friendly compounds called short-chain fatty acids, which support a diverse microbiome, a strong gut barrier, and a well-functioning immune system.

About Fructooligosaccharides (FOS)

Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) are tiny, soluble fibers. The raw material from which the FOS in our S. boulardii + FOS is produced is Non-GMO beet sugar*. These particular fibers are prebiotic, meaning that they are the preferred food of beneficial microbes like the ones in your pet’s gut. Making sure all the beneficial members of the gut microbiome get enough of the right food is crucial not just for healthy digestion but also for a strong immune system, healthy skin, and even a happy mood. Studies in dogs have shown that supplementation with FOS improves both gut health and immune function.

Really helped

Our dog was suffering badly with bouts of pancreatitis, gastritis and diarrhea all summer. We had tried the probiotics the vet prescribed but could not get him off antibiotics without recurrent diarrhea. He was severely underweight and we were considering euthanasia as he is 14 years old. We tried changing his dog food, steroids, and eliminating all treats. Even a strict homemade diet didn’t do the trick. We started him on this product and he was able to wean off antibiotics and steroids successfully. His weight is back on and he has been happy and vibrant despite his age. Very thankful we came across this.

Long overdue review, grateful to AnimalBiome

This is a very overdue review since I've been lazy, but we've been using FOS for the past year and a half. We also used the FMT capsules (Gut Restore) for the first year until eventually tapering off those because of the price.

Our pittie, Diamond, had Giardia (and metronidazole/flagyl antibiotics for it) at the shelter for who knows how long. She had loose stools and food intolerances (itchy, hot/red ears, lots of tears).

Diamond still has allergies (mainly beef) but the list of foods that she can eat has increased a lot! She can eat more grains and even chicken now without a reaction. We still give her the FOS daily because she needs it to regulate her poo (with it she poops once a daily, without it she poops once every other day).

Helped my Westie with pancreatitis

This product was recommended by my dog’s vet and it has helped him so much. Jack is an 8 year old Westie who I brought home at 9 weeks of age.
He has suffered from pancreatitis most of his life. Many vets tried different approaches including canned low fat food for years. We switched to a holistic vet here in San Diego who put him on Just Food for Dogs fish and sweet potato recipe. Then she added this probiotic and he has thrived. I was first giving one scoop with each meal and now we are down to one scoop with his 1st meal of the day. He went from throwing up and having diarrhea to feeling well, energetic and having firm well formed stools. I couldn’t be happier with the outcome.
