Does elevated E. coli mean my your pet has an E. coli infection?

Not necessarily. Many strains of E. coli can be found at low levels in healthy pets without causing disease. However, your pet's results indicate that the E. coli levels in their gut were higher than what is typically seen in healthy pets, which may disrupt the balance of the gut microbiome. These results should always be interpreted alongside your pet's symptoms, medical history, and your veterinarian's evaluation.

What may have caused my pet to have elevated levels of E. coli?

There are several reasons why E. coli may become more abundant in your pet's microbiome.

One common cause is a course of antibiotics. While antibiotics are often necessary to treat bacterial infections, they can also reduce many of the beneficial bacteria that normally help keep harmful bacteria in check. This creates an opportunity for potentially harmful bacteria, including E. coli, to grow. Some bacteria are also naturally more resistant to certain antibiotics, allowing them to survive and become more abundant during and after treatment.

E. coli can also be introduced through your pet's environment, such as drinking contaminated water, eating feces, or ingesting other contaminated sources of E. coli.

Does my pet need antibiotics?

Pets with elevated levels of E. coli typically do not need antibiotics. Instead, there are several microbiome-targeted supplements that can effectively reduce E. coli without broadly disrupting the microbiome. 

Certain prebiotic and probiotic options can help reduce E. coli by supporting the growth of beneficial bacteria. As these beneficial bacteria become more established, they naturally compete with E. coli for nutrients and space, helping restore a healthier balance in the microbiome.
